Rachel Reeves MP – Alice in Westminster

Thursday 26th Jan (7pm) at Grove Book Shop in Ilkley

Join us for an evening with Leeds MP Rachel Reeves.  When Rachel was elected MP in 2010, she learned that she was only the second woman to serve as an MP for Leeds.  She set out to find out more about Labour MP Alice Bacon, who was active in politics between 1945-1970.  It soon became clear that Bacon had a remarkable career, playing a key role in the legalisation of abortion, homosexuality and the abolition of the death penalty as Minister of State in the Home Office.  The 50th anniversary of much of that legislation takes place next year.  Alice was also instrumental in helping to roll out comprehensive education in the Department of Education, something she was passionate about as a former teacher.

Rachel’s book is ‘Alice in Westminster: The Political Life of Alice Bacon’.

Tickets for the event are £5 incl wine.
